Critters in the Office

When we think about raccoons, squirrels, mice and other pests that make their way in from the outdoors, we often picture them coming into our homes. But that’s not the only place they can come.
Offices buildings are just as susceptible as homes are to those pesky critters. Mice, for example, can squeeze through a hole the size of a dime and other animals need just a slightly bigger entrance. Just like in homes, gaps in the foundation, holes in the roof, or openings near cable cords are all a critter needs to come in for warmth and leftovers. Offices don’t necessarily receive the kind of attention that a home does. Food may not be put away, crumbs wiped up, and deterioration of the exterior of the building may not be noticed right away. That means animals may find it very tempting to make their new home in your workplace.
In addition, since many employees are not around at night when many critters are active, it might take some time before the animals are noticed. Undoubtedly, however, one Monday morning, an employee walks into the office and is horrified to see the signs of an unexpected tenant.
Just like when a pest invades your home, the signs that a critter is in your office become increasingly unmistakable.
• Droppings. Mice tend to leave droppings scattered near the area they are exploring. Their droppings tend to be pellet-like, from 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch. As squirrels, rats and raccoons are bigger, their droppings are also bigger. Rats are also known for leaving copious droppings. Although these rodents leave scattered droppings, bat poop, or guano, is often found in a pile.
• Chewed or destroyed items. These critters will gnaw on any items, including nonfood items such as foam, insulation, wiring and cardboard boxes.
• Noises. As critters enter and exit the office, or move around during the day, their scratching, scurrying noises above the ceiling or in the walls can be noticed when the area is quiet.
• Sightings. An intrepid mouse may sneak out of its hiding place, even during working hours, if it is quiet.
When any of these signs of a critter become apparent, it’s time to call for professional help.
Homeowners are often tempted to try the DIY approach to rid their home of unwanted pests—often unsuccessfully. But in an office, liability issues make it even more important to call a professional to assess the degree of infestation, determine how the critters got inside, figure out how to get them out safely and keep them out for good. Wildlife can transmit diseases if they come in contact with people, and their droppings can cause ailments if not carefully removed. Between the danger, anxiety and distraction they can cause, the sooner the critter problem is resolved, the sooner employees can feel safe and can focus on being productive.
