Why can’t I get rid of cockroaches?

If you’ve had cockroaches in your Raleigh Durham area home, you probably know the feeling. You think you’ve finally gotten rid of them. It’s been weeks since you’ve seen the last one. You turn on the lights in a dark room, and… another disgusting cockroach.
Don’t feel bad though; these little pests may be the toughest unwanted guests to get completely free of. In North Carolina, there are a handful of species of cockroach, but the most common are the American cockroach (often called a water bug or Palmetto bug) and the German cockroach. American cockroaches are bigger and a little lighter brown while German roaches are smaller and darker brown. Both are frustratingly difficult to get rid of. Here’s why they may be sticking around despite your best efforts.
Bad food hygiene
American and German cockroaches love eating our food and will thrive in places where it is most plentiful. They hang out in kitchens most for this reason. If you are in the habit of leaving food on the counter over night or even crumbs scattered around, you can bet you’re not the only one who has been munching on that food. A few plates in the sink are all it takes to keep a sizable colony living well.
Moisture and standing water
Just like we survive on food and water, the roaches do too. Those dishes “soaking” in the sink are a problem here as well, but also think about your laundry room and bathrooms. The showers and sinks are great places for them to get a drink if they aren’t clean and dry.
Accessible trash
Cockroaches are filthy creatures. That’s one reason you don’t want them around. One of their filthiest habits is hanging out in and around trash cans looking for a meal. Keep your kitchen trash covered and frequently emptied. Also, do not keep full trash cans outside near your home. Have them away from the living space when you’re waiting for the garbage collectors to come pick them up.
Other people
And one last reason that you may not be able to get rid of cockroaches… maybe it’s not you. It’s possible your next door neighbor is the slob, and their infestation has spread to your place. Or maybe your roommate has been eating on the couch and leaving crumbs everywhere. Maybe your landlord just needs to step up and do the proper prevention and maintenance.
